A successful career may conceal the most tragic of tales. Lolo Jones, who took home the USA and World Championships for hurdle events in 2013, only achieved this feat by putting in a lot of hard work and a lot of patience. Jones was the only child in a family of five who lived living in poverty. Her mother lived on the road and even inside the basement of a church in the area at one point. The sporadic lifestyle led Jones to change schools and attend the same school each year, until she began the high school. Jones was kept apart from her parents at Theodore Roosevelt for the purpose of competing in the track and field. Jones lived in four distinct homes during her time in high school, so she could complete her studies at one time. Jones won an award called the Gatorade Iowa Track and Field Athlete of the Year award at school and was also involved in the orchestra at school, playing cellist.
